Greetings to all and welcome to the Minnesota Chapter of the Association of Rehabilitation Nurses!
We are now entering the fall season and with that comes change. We have had the privilege of having a dedicated President for the past 6 years- Teri Herron. She has taken a new role at her facility and has now transitioned out of the President’s role. She has led our chapter with passion, creativity, and knowledge. As a result of her leadership, we have increased our membership as well as our funds to enable our chapter to offer more scholarships, etc. Thank you Teri for all you’ve done for our chapter. It is greatly appreciated! We wish you the best as you travel your new career path! Last year, we were able to provide a scholarship to the National ARN Conference and this year we will be able to do the same. Congratulations to Maggie Engelmeier who is the recipient of the scholarship this year. We look forward to hearing about your experience. I realize in the past Teri attended the national conference and she coordinated a networking time for others who attended from Minnesota to meet in between sessions. I will not be able to attend this year’s conference and as a result will not be able to coordinate a meeting. I do know that Jill Karelis, our chapter’s treasurer will be attending. If anyone would like to meet up with her, etc. I would encourage you to reach out to her.
In July, our newly elected board members met to plan the upcoming year’s offerings, etc. We look forward to the upcoming Board Meetings and Educational Offerings on November 10th, 2016 at Regions on Functional Outcomes, Prognosis and Sexuality of the SCI Patient and in February 2017 (date to be announced later) at Gillette Children’s on Transporting and care of Tracheostomy/Ventilator Dependent Patients. ANCC approved Contact Hours will be pursued for these educational offerings. Attendees will have the option to attend in person or via teleconference.
Please consider additional educational offerings:
September 28th- October 1st at the Marriott in Philadelphia- The Annual National ARN Conference. Visit www.rehabnurse.org for further details.
April 2017- The 15th Annual MN-ARN Spring Conference at Allina Health. Date/ speakers yet to be determined.
As more information is learned, etc. Further emails will be sent out to update everyone. All information regarding events at any rehabilitation facility will be posted. Please send information for upcoming educational events that you would like posted to: dana.keliin@allina.com.

Welcome to the Minnesota Chapter of the Association of Rehabilitation Nurses!
The fall season is upon us and summer is coming to an end. This time of year to me always feels like a time of transition, switching gears from completion of last term’s activities and summer vacations to kids returning to school and preparation/planning for the next term and year to come. The MN ARN Board of Directors recently met to plan out the next year’s activities and offerings. Each year we hope to bring something new to our Chapter and to our membership. Last year we awarded two scholarships to attend the National ARN conference in Anaheim, CA and one scholarship to attend our Annual Spring Conference. The feedback from membership was very positive and it is clear to us that members would like to continue to see scholarship opportunities being presented. Your feedback was received, reviewed and carefully considered. We are excited to announce that Marie Navara from Gillette Children’s Hospital has been awarded the 2015 scholarship to attend the National ARN Conference in New Orleans, LA at the end of this month. Congratulations Marie! We look forward to hearing about your experience and highlights from the conference! I will be attending the National Conference again this year as well and would love to have the opportunity to meet up with fellow MN Rehabilitation Nurses at the conference. Last year a group of approximately 8 MN ARN nurses met in between sessions to network. It is such a special opportunity to meet at the National ARN conference to network with one another. The atmosphere of hundreds of rehabilitation nurses from around the Nation gathering to share their passion of their chosen profession is unlike anything else I have experienced and it is my favorite part of attending the National Conference! If you are planning to attend the conference in New Orleans, LA September 30 – October 3rd and would like to meet in-between sessions please contact me so we can further exchange contact information for setting up a time and a place to meet! The National ARN conference also provides many opportunities for National and Chapter leaders to network and share resources for our Chapter’s growth. This year I will be attending the Chapter Leaders Reception on the opening night of the conference and I look forward to seeing what new information and resources will be presented that can be brought back to the Board of Directors and to you all for consideration. In the past this reception has provided our Chapter with the resources for our website and teleconferencing. This reception provides a unique opportunity for exploration of other Chapters’ activities, ideas and recommendations. If there is an item you would like me to inquire about at this reception please notify me prior to September 28th.
This year MN ARN is happy to announce that scholarships for CRRN review courses will also be offered along with scholarships to our Annual Spring Conference. E-mail notifications will be sent out with details for these scholarships, as well as posted on our website www.mn-arn.org and on our Facebook PageMinnesota Chapter- Association of Rehabilitation Nurses.
We look forward to the upcoming Board Meetings and Educational Offering on Wednesday, November 11, 2015 at Essentia Health Duluth Rehabilitation Services and on Wednesday, February 3, 2016 at Courage Kenny Rehabilitation -United Hospital in St. Paul. Welcome to the Minnesota Chapter of the Association of Rehabilitation Nurses!
Spring has finally arrived and just as the trees and flowers will begin to bud and our surroundings will bloom and transform, so will our Chapter. July 1, 2015 marks the beginning of the new term for the MN ARN Board of Directors. We will say goodbye to possibly a few of our very dedicated and treasured Board of Directors and will open our arms to new members in their place. Ballots will soon be sent out to for voting in the next terms Board of Directors. There is still a need for the Vice President position which is a vital role in maintaining our Chapter’s status as an operating part of the National ARN organization. Without a Vice President our Chapter will be forced to close. I personally find this possibility very heartbreaking as I look back over the past 7 years of my involvement in this organization and the growth I have witnessed. Seven years ago our membership consisted of around 60 nurses. We currently have 93 active MN ARN members!!! That is a 50% increase in our membership in just a few years’ time. That tells me that the rehab nurses in our state are passionate, dedicated nurses who love their profession and have a desire to grow professionally, network and obtain contact hours for maintaining their CRRN or for specialty specific knowledge. This is a time for continued growth and pulling together as a group of highly specialized nurses, and is NOT the time to close the doors to opportunities. While I love this profession and have highly enjoyed my involvement in this Chapter including the last 4 years as President, I believe that it is important to have a change in Presidency and I am only able to commit myself to 1 more year as this Chapter’s President. I am asking that as a valued member of the MN ARN that you strongly consider adding your name to the ballot under Vice President. As Vice President you will have 1 year to learn the role as President and the operations of the MN ARN Chapter. You will receive close mentorship and lots of support. As you transition to President the following year you will continue to receive my support. As a Past President I will remain committed to the organization and to supporting the Board of Directors in their new roles.
Together we can plant more seeds, add water, some love, and watch this Chapter grow and continue to meet the needs of its Members. After recently completing a review of the Annual Conference evaluation forms it is very evident that our Chapter Members have a desire to continue to attend this Chapter’s educational opportunities and annual conference. There were also requests for webinars and additional networking opportunities. In order to accommodate these requests we will need nurses who are willing to help pull together the resources and commit time to see that the events are well thought out and carried out. We are already well underway in planning next year’s events with in-services at Duluth Essentia Health and Courage Kenny Rehabilitation Institute –United Hospital in St. Paul. As always we are always looking for rehab facilities that are willing to open their doors and co-provide an in-service with our Chapter. These are great opportunities to meet with rehab nurses from around the state, to network, to tour other rehab facilities and to learn about advances in Rehabilitation Nursing.
Please join me in looking ahead at Rehabilitation Nursing educational opportunities, networking and chapter news!

Getting Back to What We’ve Always Known: Part 2
A Two-Part Series on Critical Thinking and the “Busy Mindset”
Ginny Beeson, MSN NEA-BC
In this half of the series we are asking nurses to take a fresh look at their work schedules. Being busy at work and using a simple checklist for tasks takes away from patient interaction and may lead to treatment errors. It’s time for rehabilitation nurses to get back to the core values of their practice and end the “busy mindset.”
The Role of the Post-Acute Staff Nurse in Preventing Rehospitalizations
The January/February 2015 Rehabilitation Nursing journal issue focused on transitions of care and featured a first-of-its-kind quality improvement project published in medical and nursing literature. Welcome to the Minnesota Chapter of the Association of Rehabilitation Nurses!
The Holidays have come and gone and the cold has settled in with the New Year. This time of the year is always a great time to reflect on the past year’s events and to look ahead at this year’s upcoming events! Last year the MN ARN awarded its first Scholarships to two of our Chapter’s Member’s, Leann Huseth and Jill Karelis. They attended the National ARN Conference in Anaheim, California at Disneyland. It was a MAGICAL conference with many opportunities for networking, sharing, learning and connecting. In November CentraCare St. Cloud hosted the MN ARN board meeting and co-provided a Presentation on Charge Nurse Development. Thank you Ann Sumar and Deb Eisenstad for an exciting and informative presentation! It was very well received! Thank you Sally Wulfing for organizing a very large teleconference group for this presentation at Gillette Children’s Specialty Healthcare! What a wonderful way to network with co-workers!
This year we look forward to the upcoming board meeting and educational offering at Regions Hospital Rehabilitation on February 10, 2015 on Somali Culture and How it Affects Healthcare. Thank you for hosting and co-providing! The 13th Annual MN Chapter ARN Spring Conference/Seminar is fast approaching! Once again we will co-provide with Courage Kenny Rehabilitation Institute for this conference at the Allina Commons Pettingill Hall. We are excited for this year’s conference and look forward to reconnecting with those of you who attend every year as well as meeting rehab nurses new to our conference. Friday, July 11, 2014
Welcome to the Minnesota Chapter of the Association of Rehabilitation Nurses!
While this Letter from the President is overdue, the MN ARN has been busy behind the scenes organizing Chapter events and educational offerings, participating in the MS Walk and preparing our Chapter’s first Scholarship opportunities! November 2013 HCMC Knapp Rehab hosted our Board Meeting and presented a very informative in-service on Maintaining Staff Safety While Caring for the Difficult Patient. Thank you for your support of the MN ARN Chapter and for hosting this event! Unfortunately due to the weather and a family emergency with a Board Member the February 2014 Board Meeting and In-service was cancelled and will be held in November 2014. The date and time is still to be determined. Big change came in April when the MN ARN Chapter co-provided with Courage Kenny Rehabilitation Institute to host the 12th Annual Spring Conference at the Allina Commons in Minneapolis. Thank you for your consideration in a new venue and a new partnership. We received significant feedback regarding the conference (speakers, presentations, food, venue, set-up, and overall experience). Both the Spring Conference Committee and the MN ARN Board of Directors have reviewed every comment and suggestion and will use this feedback in planning next year’s conference. The feedback was extremely positive and we are happy to announce the 2015 13th Annual Conference will for the second year be co-provided with Courage Kenny Rehabilitation Institute and held at the Allina Commons. This partnership has allowed us the opportunity to reduce conference expenses while continuing to provide a high quality conference. In reducing the expenses the MN ARN Chapter funds were able to be re-directed into other avenues. We are very excited to announce two Scholarship opportunities through the MN ARN Chapter. The applications for the Scholarships have been e-mailed and mailed (to those members without e-mail addresses listed) to MN ARN members. Applications will also be posted on our website. The Scholarships are for tuition for attendance of the 2015 MN ARN Spring Conference and tuition and travel expenses for attending the 2014 National ARN Conference October 29-November 1, 2014 in Anaheim, California at the Disneyland Hotel. Scholarship applications are due August 1, 2014.

12th Annual MN Chapter ARN Spring Conference
This year’s Annual Spring Conference was held at the Allina Commons in Minneapolis, MN on Friday, April 4, 2014. It was a successful conference despite another big snow storm. We received great feedback from attendees on the location, speakers, presentations, food and overall conference experience. The conference planning committee will utilize this feedback to plan the 2015 conference. MN ARN has decided to partner with Courage Kenny Rehabilitation Institute again for the 2015 conference and utilize the Allina Commons conference area. This partnership provided the MN ARN the opportunity to offer scholarships for the 2014 National ARN conference and 2015 MN ARN Spring Conference. We look forward to a fantastic 13th Annual Spring Conference in 2015!

The article, authored by ARN Past-President Cynthia Jacelon, featured a quality improvement project focusing on the post-acute care staff nurse's role in preventing rehospitalizations.
